The Netherlands contemplates the world’s toughest climate law

A new Dutch proposal would put climate at the center of national politics.

mindblowingscience:

Last week, a coalition of seven Dutch political parties unveiled a climate policy proposal that is breathtaking in its ambition. If it becomes law, it will codify the most stringent targets for greenhouse gas reductions of any country in the world.

There are still several steps between the proposal and passage, including debate in both houses of Parliament, and lawmakers may make changes. But given the broad political support — the parties involved control 113 of 150 seats in Parliament — it is widely expected to pass in something like its current form by late next summer.

Implementing Speeches/Essays

education-ideas:

When taking a quiz or test and circling a multiple choice answer, or even filling in a blank, the amount of thought regarding the answer is only ankle deep; meaning, the only thought going into answering the question is “what is the answer?”, not “why is it the answer?” This leads to individuals only being able to state an answer, and not being able to explain it, and in turn, the information isn’t considered valuable to the learner.

Ideally, if students were required to write a paper or speech regarding a topic discussed in class, the amount of thought and preparation would increase drastically. Rather than only answering the question, they now must answer the “why” portion as well. Of course, there are only so many days in the school year and the time spent on papers or speeches could interfere and limit the time spent on the rest of the subjects; however, the benefits of doing so are only limited by the amount of effort put into the concept.

When challenging students to do more and/or to think more, it becomes clear that more is expected of them than just the minimum. High school is a place young adults go in order to better themselves, when they, like many others, are allowed to coast through while it (high school) was established to prepare and better them, what good is it? By introducing more profound thoughts or deeper notions, students will be required to think and learn on a deeper level.
